Frequently Asked Questions

Home Delivered Meals

How does someone qualify for home delivered meals?
Home delivery is reserved for seniors age 60+ who are essentially homebound, unable to prepare balanced meals, and have no one who is preparing meals in the home.
How much does it cost?
For seniors age 60 and over, meals are provided on a donation basis. The suggested donation in $2.75 per meal. Seniors are asked to donate what they can afford. It could be more or less than the suggested amount. For those under the age of 60, meals can be provided on a private-pay basis or by community grants as they are available.
How do I donate?
If you are over age 60, you will receive a “Letter of Information” with an envelope each month. Contributions of cash or checks made out to Meals on Wheels should be placed in the envelope provided and given to the volunteer who brings your meals. Clients under the age of 60 are served primarily on a private pay basis.  A limited number of under-age-60 clients are served through grant funding and are asked to donate as they are able.
How many meals a week do I get?
Your hot meal is delivered Monday through Friday between 11:00 am and 12 noon. For holidays and weekends, frozen meals may be delivered ahead of time.
How do I change or cancel meals service?
If you are not going to be home, we ask for one day advance notice so we can adjust our kitchen orders. If you have an emergency and can’t be home, please call as soon as possible to notify your site manager. If you are not home for a scheduled delivery and have not notified Meals on Wheels, we will call your emergency contacts to ensure your well-being. To terminate meal service, you may call the main office or the local dining center which serves you.
Can the delivery volunteers leave my meal if I am not home?
No, the volunteers are not allowed to leave a meal unless someone is home to receive it.  Part of our service is a check on our clients. We also are unable to leave your meal unattended due to food safety concerns.
Do you offer any special diets?
We offer a “modified meal” which provides reduced-sugar or fruit alternative desserts. Although we do not add salt during the cooking process, our regular meals are not considered a low-sodium menu.  However, we do offer low sodium frozen meals which average between 500 and 600 mg sodium, including beverage.

“Without Meals on Wheels, I would literally starve to death or have to be moved to a nursing home. I have no energy to cook, and I’m always struggling just to catch my breath. The drivers are my lifeline to the world, and I can’t wait to see them every day. I just don’t know what I’d do without you guys. I thank every one of you.”
